There is such thing as overreaching. There are vast benefits to the use of social media to facilitate the wide range of different types of children and their approach to social interactions. Such as the case of the shy children who don't interact well at school. To deprive them of an alternative and force them to either deal with a social interaction they are not comfortable with or be alone is dystopian. The issue is the ways that abuse can and should be addressed on the platform. Things like 24/7 hotlines specific to the social media sites dedicated to dealing with this issue would go a long way. But something as simple as submitting a ticket and hoping action to be taken is not enough. But just as easily as they can be abused, people can use an online space to be helped greatly. It's a new realm which means a new realm of security needs to be accessible.

I TRIED. I had blocks on their phones. So their friends let them set up accounts. My kids had time blocks on their Xbox accounts too - but there are apps to override. It goes both ways. Parents should definitely monitor their children's online presence. But from a moral standpoint and doing the right thing, if you own such a large app, and you are very aware of such crimes, you should do something about it.
Is it possible to stop this? It's hard to know who your teenage daughter is chatting with on Instagram, Facebook, or other social media. It could be someone your age. Or your teenage son might be trying to buy drugs through these platforms. It's nearly impossible for parents to have control over this because everyone has internet access. The real question is: do we actually need social media in our lives? Does this kind of entertainment cause too much harm to our society?

It's not the responsibility of a "company" to tell your child what to look up, what to post, and how to act on a social media platform or the internet. That responsibility is the parents, and if you're letting your child be exposed to that environment instead of properly monitoring what they do, then you are undoubtably failing as one. While I agree that corporations could put many measures into place to ensure a safer online context and community for those under the age of 18, it still would not solve the problem in this ever growing digital environment.

There is such thing as overreaching. There are vast benefits to the use of social media to facilitate the wide range of different types of children and their approach to social interactions. Such as the case of the shy children who don't interact well at school. To deprive them of an alternative and force them to either deal with a social interaction they are not comfortable with or be alone is dystopian. The issue is the ways that abuse can and should be addressed on the platform. Things like 24/7 hotlines specific to the social media sites dedicated to dealing with this issue would go a long way. But something as simple as submitting a ticket and hoping action to be taken is not enough. But just as easily as they can be abused, people can use an online space to be helped greatly. It's a new realm which means a new realm of security needs to be accessible.

If I was a dad, I would never let my kid use technology giving access to this. It’s the parents fault for this mess since the allowed this to happen. iPhones have this feature on iMessage. My mom sent me a selfie and it triggered a false alarm. There is no perfect solution to this mess. Either sacrifice freedom or sacrifice privacy by requiring ID to use the service. If I was in command of this, I would require ID to post items or see them if it had this. Still no perfect solution.
